Dr. James M. Thomas, Assistant Professor of Sociology, was invited to contribute an essay to a “Part Two” of Charlottesville Symposium published online by Contexts, a quarterly general-audience magazine published by the American Sociological Association. The symposium includes essays by top scholars in the field, including Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Joe Feagin, and others. In his essay, “What are Our University’s Obligations?”, Thomas asks us to consider whether and how the events of Charlottesville challenges universities to reconsider their obligations to their campus publics.
